Jellybean 96; Big Data with Nik Kumar

Big data. It’s very big. There’s a lot of it. It’s Jellybean time. Matt McPartlin strikes gold in Wollongong.

Moment to moment information on heart rate, respiratory rate, how much urine has come out, how much fluid has gone in, the sodium, the glucose, the pH and what was had for breakfast. And that’s just one hour, from one patient in one of sixteen beds, in one ICU, in one hospital, in one city, from one state.

That’s a lot of data. It takes machines and algorithm to process. Intelligence of the artificial type. Automated processing.

So who manages the machines? Who decides what patterns to watch for? What can be learned from it.

Big data is a term that has become increasingly tossed around at research meetings and medical conferences. The multi-centre RCT is under attack. It’s expensive, restrictive and only ever seems to beget more RCTs. Is Big Data here to replace RCTs or to refine it?

Big data may be more reflective of real world practice and variance. Like a mega-collection of annecdotal evidence – a Megadote, or maybe a Metadote.

Nik Kumar is an ICU registrar who trundled along to the ANZICS Datathon in April to see what all the fuss was about and whether he could use it for some of the projects he had in mind. He went with few expectations. He came back with a whole new perspective on not just data collection and analysis but on collaborative research and future directions for determining trends in practice. He also likes pizza.

Big thanks to Matt for recording another Jellybean. Thanks to Dr Nik Kumar for explaining some high end health focused data science. It is not a main stream thing. (Yet.) It is one of those interesting things that hang around at the edges of our working lives.

Here at the Jellybean podcast, we love the fringes. We love to learn a little more about the stuff that isn’t in the books, that’s not on any syllabus but is relevant. It might seem small but as we should all know; from little things big things grow.

Thanks to Big Data for making the music. We couldn’t resist using one of their tunes. The intro and outro music is from Big Data’s track Dangerous

@wanderingsootball I used to travel with Sluggy all the time. He still comes on many trips but he is less of an exhibitionist these days. Or maybe he just didn’t want to steal all the limelight. I don’t know. He doesn’t talk much. But somehow I feel that Kuro and Sluggy might get on. He’s made of slugginess and slime. He’s not made of soot but he is a big fan of Spirited Away. Am I right in assuming that Kuro is in fact one of the very talented soot ball actors from the scenes in the boiler room with Kamaji, the Boilerman?

You could sleep on the couch? But why would you when you can sleep on the roof? Another #urban #rooftop #winter #hammockcamping in #Brunswick #melbourne #victoria #australia Hammock @ddhammocks Tarp @hammockgear pimped with @dutchwaregear Quilts @hammockgear Cans @marshallamps_uk @marshallamps_us
My mate Gerry. A winemaker and wine thief #extraordinaire Here clambering among French oak at @willowcreekvineyard in ninja like fashion ( the equally agile @mammoth_wine might be concerned about her bringing a knife to a gun-fight! ) thanks to @mpplunge for a great day.
A rather different sort of trip today. @mpplunge
#hammockcamping where #hammocks don’t make sense. I’m always out on the trail with my #hammock but I’m often out there with people that sleep on the ground or in a hut. Funnily enough that’s not always the easiest place to find a good #hang ... maybe I’m hanging out with the wrong people? #frenchmanscap #tasmania #australia #incessantrain #underquilt @hammockgear & @dutchwaregear
New Post on the website. #hammockcamping with people who do not do #hammocks It’s a complex matter!
Sleeping up at about 1000 metres on the side of #FrenchmansCap in #Tasmania in the #rain and #cloud and in my #dutchware #hammock under my old @hammockgear #tarp at #Tahune outside the very nice new #TahuneHut Everyone was stuck in the hut, except the idiot in a hammock! That was me! I wanted to see how much rain and wind I could manage and I was beside the hut if it failed. I don’t know how much rain fell but my @hennessyhammock water collector caught 2000 mls in 6 hours and that was collecting from the highpoint of the #caternary cut on one side. It was around freezing and the rain and spray was actually going upwards as the wind funnelled up the valley below #LakeTahune There is one reasonable hammock spot on a tent platform outside the amazing new hut. The trees are small so you really get bounced around when the winds hit #galeforce but I stayed dry and warm. In four days I never saw the #Cap despite taking a very wet walk up to the #summit the day after the worst weather. Despite it all this has to be close to the #mostbeautifulplaceonearth even in the #incessantrain It was so dark I had to put the camera down for a 1/30 second exposure and it blew over twice.
Walked up #FrenchmansCap in #Tasmania in the #rain and #cloud and slept in my #hammock at #Tahune outside the very nice new #TahuneHut in four days I never saw the #Cap despite taking a very wet walk up to the #summit This has to be close to the #mostbeautifulplaceonearth even in the #incessantrain
#rooftop #urban #hammockcamping in #Melbourne This time we see a bit of #classy @hammockgear action with my old #cuben 4D4S tarp just about squeezing into a wee space and my new 0 degree econ #underquilt Off to #frenchmanscap in #Tasmania with this set up next week. It will rain and rain and rain!
